Adviser’s Corner

Every lodge adviser uses this column to accomplish many different things in many different styles. I would like to use this chance to stop and remind ourselves of lessons we have all heard in the past, but are truly the basics of what will make our lodge stronger not only today ian_romainebut for the future .So, is the Wa-Hi-Nasa Lodge really a Brotherhood of Cheerful Service? As another year begins, we must look at the core of our or-ganization and see what we can do to make ourselves better. Too many times I hear people not in the OA and some in the OA regarding the Order as a “Good Old Boys Club.” Is that what the Order should be?

The theme of the 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference is “The Power of One.” It is important to think about what the power of one person can do. As a youth and brand new OA member, my experi-ence with one person almost made me decide to never do anything with the Order. I am very grateful that a few years later, it took one person to encourage me to come back into the fold. We all have friends that we love to see at lodge events, but to truly make our Order a Brotherhood we all must go outside of our per-sonal comfortable bubble and meet new people. Be the one that brings people into the fold.

Our lodge is a very complex organization. We need to constantly bring people in and share what skills we have. This will not only make us better leaders and teachers but teach a next generation of leaders in our lodge.
The biggest question facing all of us is who will we be? Will you com-mit to be that one person that strengthens the Lodge? A positive and sincere two minute conversation at the right time with someone that you do not know can make all the difference.

Yours in the Brotherhood,
Ian Romaine
